KANGAROO SCOUTS - ALL AGES

Come along and try our Kangaroo Scout group, especially formed for adults and teenagers with an intellectual disability.

The  Kangaroo section has been running now for over 14 years now, and some of our Scouts come from private & group homes in the Sutherland & St George area.

We play lots of games each week, and we usually make some craft, do cooking, sing songs or listen to stories.

At the beginning of each meeting we start with an opening ceremony, where we all stand on the big circle painted on the hall floor and unwrap the Australian flag which we all salute. We then say either the “Kangaroo Scout Promise” or “Law”, and start playing our games.

Some weeks we might go on walks, or have campfires. Other weeks we might have visitors to show us something special. There are lots of helpers at each meeting who play with us and help with craft if you need it.

At the end of each meeting we have a closing ceremony, on the circle, when a short prayer is said, the “Kangaroo Scout Promise” or “Law” is said, and the flag is saluted and wrapped up.

The “Kangaroo Scout Promise” says: I promise to do my best, love my God and be helpful.

The “Kangaroo Scout Law” says: A Kangaroo Scout Cares, a Kangaroo Scout Shares.

Scouts are a special group of people who are helpful, care and share and try to do their best.

Please wear something comfortable, like a t-shirt and shorts or long pants. Some of our games might need you to get down on the floor, so please don’t wear your best clothes. You will need to wear covered shoes, like sandshoes, and socks.

If you come along and enjoy the Scout group, you will get a white “new chum” scarf, which you wear around your neck to all the meetings. (But we take it off while we are playing games).

Later in the term if you want to join our group, we will have a special ceremony for your investiture into the 1st Bangor Kangaroos group, and you will then swap your white scarf for the 1st Bangor scarf, which is blue, with a yellow and brown stripe.

There is also a special blue Scout shirt, with red sleeves that will be your Scout uniform that you can then wear to all of our meetings if you join our group.

There are lots of badges that you can earn if you want to, that can be sewn onto your uniform. There is an Athlete badge that you get when you can run 50 metres, throw a ball, and do some jumping. You get a Collector badge when you collect one group of objects, and then talk about them. You can get an Entertainer badge when you can sing some songs, and make and play a homemade instrument. There are many more badges for many different things. If you like something, we can have a go. Remember in Scouting it is to do “your” best.

For some of our meetings we would like your family and friends to come to watch if they are able, especially for your important investiture ceremony. We will send them a special invitation for these weeks.

We are  looking forward to you coming to have a look at the Kangaroo’s meetings, and hope that you will enjoy them.
