Joeys

JOEY SCOUTS - 6 TO 8 YEARS - Your first jump into Scouting

Joey Scouts is the first section of Scouts, for boys and girls aged 6 – 8.  The emphasis is on fun and friendship and a gentle introduction to a world of challenges and adventures through Scouting.  A trained Joey Scout Leader guides the Joey Mob as they learn to share and care for each other in a social environment.  It’s more then school as it extends each child’s understanding of the world around them.

Joey Scouts are encouraged to express themselves creatively, through games, stories and craft activities.  From building monsters and spaceships from scrap items, to growing plants from seedlings and singing songs together, all Joeys develop a strong sense of belonging and an understanding of the world around them.

Joey Scouts learn how to socialise with other children and help other people.  They also learn how to recognise native birds and animals, and develop an understanding of the impact of our modern world on the environment.

Learning Life Skills

In Joeys, young people learn about:

  • Socialising with other children
  • Basic bushcraft
  • Reacting to emergencies
  • Taking responsibility
  • Basic adventure-based activities

Girls and boys are equally involved.

Being a Member

We recognise that each of our Members has different obligations and priorities beyond Scouting. School is paramount and we strive to support School and other activities rather than compete with them. We also understand that our Members have many other demands on their time and we work with Members and parents to ensure that they balance them all.

FRIENDSHIP & BELONGING

Making new friends and building social skills are very important for Joey Scouts.  For some, belonging to Joey Scouts provides an opportunity to mix with a new group of people, developing their confidence and ability to make new friends.  Joey Scout families are welcome to get involved too!  There’s lots of opportunities for the whole family  to make new friends and feel part of the community too.

ADVENTURE

Joey Scouts is often the first change for young children to have a real adventure, like their first abseil, a visit to the local fire station or even their first overnight camp!
